Omocodia — Italian Tax Code Homocode Variants Generator

Enter an Italian Codice Fiscale and generate all 7 progressive homocode variants. Learn what omocodia is, how the Revenue Agency resolves it, and the digit-to-letter substitution table (0→L, 1→M, … 9→V).

What is omocodia? When two different people (similar name, surname, date and place of birth) generate the same code, the Agenzia delle Entrate progressively replaces digits with letters — starting from the last numeric position — until a unique code is obtained. The official mapping is: 0→L, 1→M, 2→N, 3→P, 4→Q, 5→R, 6→S, 7→T, 8→U, 9→V.

How Omocodia (Homocode) Works

Omocodia occurs when the D.M. 12/03/1974 algorithm generates the same fiscal code for two different people. The Italian Revenue Agency resolves the collision with a system of progressive digit-to-letter substitution.

Substitution Table: Digit → Letter

Digit0123456789
LetterLMNPQRSTUV

Progressive Substitution Order

Level 1: substitute position 15 (3rd digit of Belfiore code)
Level 2: substitute position 14 (2nd digit of Belfiore code)
Level 3: substitute position 13 (1st digit of Belfiore code)
Level 4: substitute position 11 (2nd digit of day)
Level 5: substitute position 10 (1st digit of day)
Level 6: substitute position 8 (2nd digit of year)
Level 7: substitute position 7 (1st digit of year)

Check Digit Recalculation

Each substitution modifies the first 15 characters, so the check digit (position 16) must be recalculated for every variant. The calculator does this automatically.

Example: 7 Homocode Variants of RSSMRA90A15H501K

Starting from the base CF RSSMRA90A15H501K (Rossi Mario, 15/01/1990, Rome):

LevelPositionSubstitutionCodice Fiscale
Base——RSSMRA90A15H501K
1151 → MRSSMRA90A15H50MK*
2140 → LRSSMRA90A15H5LMK*
3135 → RRSSMRA90A15HRLMK*
4115 → RRSSMRA90A1RHRLMK*
5101 → MRSSMRA90AMRHRLMK*
680 → LRSSMRA9LAMRHRLMK*
779 → VRSSMRAVLAMRHRLMK*

* Check digit is recalculated for each variant (shown as K for simplicity).

Direct answers

What is omocodia (homocode) in the Italian Codice Fiscale?
Omocodia occurs when two or more different people generate the same fiscal code using the standard algorithm (same surname/name initials, same birth date/place and sex). There are approximately 5,000 new homocode cases per year in Italy. The Revenue Agency resolves each collision by assigning a homocode variant.
How does the Revenue Agency resolve omocodia?
The Agency progressively replaces digits in the CF with equivalent letters, starting from the rightmost numeric position toward the beginning. The numeric positions are (right to left): 15, 14, 13, 11, 10, 8, 7. The substitution table is: 0→L, 1→M, 2→N, 3→P, 4→Q, 5→R, 6→S, 7→T, 8→U, 9→V.
How many homocode variants exist for a Codice Fiscale?
There are 7 progressive substitution levels (one for each numeric position in the CF), so a maximum of 7 homocode variants. The calculator generates all of them from the base CF. In theory 128 combinations are possible, but the Agency always proceeds in progressive order.
Does the check digit change with omocodia?
Yes. Each homocode variant has a different check digit, recalculated on the modified first 15 characters. The calculator regenerates the check digit for each of the 7 variants.
How can I tell if my Codice Fiscale has omocodia?
A homocode CF contains letters where digits normally appear (positions 7-8, 10-11, 13-15). For example, if position 15 has 'M' instead of '1', it's a level-1 homocode. The Verify tab of the calculator automatically detects and reports homocode CFs.
